Gold Plating Care

Gold Plating Care
It is important to take care to extend the life of your gold plated jewellery.
All jewellery is vulnerable to the hard knocks of the physical universe. Rings scratch, bracelets dent, and links rub against each other and wear out.
With plated pieces, the gold comprises only a very thin outer layer. Thin layers of almost any substance are more susceptible to damage than thicker layers. Makes sense, right? Think of how easy it is to break a piece of string in contrast to a thick rope...it pays to be careful with your plated jewellery as it can become scratched and worn.
Gold plating can also tarnish easily if it is subjected to any material that isn’t pH neutral.

So how do you protect your plated jewellery?
Here are just a few tips:
Remove your jewellery before you swim in chlorine or salt water.
Remove your jewellery before participating in activities that will cause you to sweat a lot.
Wait to put on your jewellery until after you have applied lotion, makeup or perfume.
Remove jewellery if you will be bringing it into contact with something hard. (For example, take off your ring before lifting weights).
Store your plated jewellery where it won’t rub against other hard substances (a soft bag—one per piece of jewellery—is ideal).
Wipe your gold plated jewellery after each use, using a soft cloth to remove any dirt or debris.
If your jewellery is tarnished beyond what a good cleaning can remedy, all is not lost. You can breathe new life into your jewellery by having it re-plated. Email us at hello@lalunecollective.com
